William Wolfe, MD

Dr. William R. Wolfe is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He also serves as the Medical Director for the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Clinical Team at the San Francisco VA Health Care System. Dr. Wolfe’s academic journey began with a B.A. in Philosophy from Columbia College, followed by an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at UCSF, where he also served as Chief Resident.

Dr. Wolfe has made significant contributions to both clinical practice and research, with a focus on PTSD, measurement-based care, and interdisciplinary mental health education. He has been involved in multiple high-impact clinical trials, including the National Adaptive Trial for PTSD-related Insomnia and studies exploring the efficacy of Prolonged Exposure Therapy combined with Oxytocin.

In his role at the San Francisco VA, Dr. Wolfe oversees the PTSD 360 Clinic, which integrates multidisciplinary approaches to PTSD treatment and provides a robust training environment for residents and fellows. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators and the Psychiatrist Appreciation Award from the San Francisco VA.

Dr. Wolfe’s research has been widely published, covering topics from the impacts of HIV stigma in Botswana to innovative approaches in PTSD care for veterans. He continues to mentor residents and trainees, contributing significantly to the academic and clinical missions of UCSF.
